Discussion paper calls for creation of state body to assess risky experiments

The Max Planck Society has published a discussion paper on ethical considerations of genome editing in humans, explaining why it will not engage in such research.

The society’s ethics council issued the paper on 16 October, highlighting the risks and potential of genetically editing humans, animals and plants. The council concluded that the various applications of technology in plant breeding, medicine, or pest control raise their own ethical questions and are to be treated individually.
