Academies launch campaign to promote freedom of research

The Alliance of Science Organisations has started a campaign for scientific freedom to mark the 70th anniversary of the Grundgesetz, Germany’s “basic law”.

The Grundgesetz states that “arts and sciences, research and teaching shall be free”. It started as a placeholder devised by British, French and United States allies after the second world war, in preparation for a proper constitution to be created after German unification.

According to a statement by the German organisations that form the alliance, freedom of science is a fundamental right that must always be defended, all over the world.
