Berlin health institute incorporated into Charité

The GWK, a committee that coordinates funding between the federal and state governments, has agreed to make the Berlin Institute of Health a part of the Charité university hospital.

The decision means that the federal government, which provides 90 per cent of the Berlin Institute of Health’s basic financing, will therefore have some say in the financing of Charité.

This is the first time in Germany’s post-war history that the federal government has had a say in the basic financing of a university hospital. The decision was made possible after a change in the country’s Grundgesetz, its equivalent to a constitution.
