Ten institutions and one higher education alliance have been picked as Germany’s best universities, making them eligible for extra funding of €150 million a year.

The winners of the German Excellence Strategy, a competition to reward and foster the country’s best research locations, were announced on 19 July. The scheme was introduced in 2005 as the Excellence Initiative, with the aim of strengthening the international competitiveness of German higher education.

The competition takes place regularly. This latest round of funding—the fourth—gives each winner a permanent title.
