States commit to €28bn contract for higher education

Government seals deal to co-finance next seven years of research and teaching

Germany’s federal government has approved budgets put forward by the states to set up the Future Contract on Strengthening Studies and Teaching, which will be worth a total of €28 billion.

The burden of paying for the contract will be split between the states and the federal government. The agreement will run from 2021 to 2027 and will finance most day-to-day higher education activity in Germany.
