Proportion of female professors stagnates in Germany

Only 26 per cent of full-time professors in the country in 2020 were women

The proportion of female academic staff in German universities has remained static at 40 per cent in 2020—the same percentage as the previous year, according to Federal Statistical Office data.

At the end of 2020, a total of around 759,000 people were employed at German universities and university hospitals, including 415,000 scientific employees, the Destatis figures show. The number of staff increased by an overall 2.9 per cent compared with the previous year.
