Survey slams lack of equality progress at German universities

Leadership remains male and stale after missed chance to reverse status quo

Germany’s academic leadership is sorely lacking in diversity, according to a report which found that the typical university head in the country is male, 57 years old and from the west.

The Centre for Higher Education Developments (CHE) analysed the CVs of 283 presidents and rectors at German universities and universities of applied sciences. In a report released in time for International Women’s Day on 8 March, the think tank lamented that just 23 per cent of German higher education institutions are led by a woman.
