German family minister resigns after plagiarism allegations

Franziska Giffey’s move comes ahead of results of ongoing investigation by Berlin university

Germany’s family minister Franziska Giffey has stepped down from her post due to the “burdensome procedure” she faced surrounding the re-evaluation of her PhD by the Freie Universität Berlin.

The university first decided to investigate Giffey’s PhD in 2019, after receiving allegations of plagiarism. The university issued an official reprimand in November 2019 after finding 27 instances that fulfilled its criteria for plagiarism, but let the minister keep her title.
