Karliczek wants to improve forecasts and understanding of risks posed to Germany by climate change
Germany’s science minister, Anja Karliczek, has called for more long-term research into extreme weather events.
She made the statement in the aftermath of devastating floods in west Germany at the beginning of this month, which left at least 177 people dead. The floods, to which authorities were alerted by the European Flood Awareness System, were followed by widespread alarm over the country’s insufficient warning infrastructure.
