In depth: ‘Civilian clauses’ that ban military research at German universities should be abandoned in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the country’s national science academy has said.

Such institutions have traditionally shied away from work with a military use in post-war Germany, but Russian aggression has dramatically altered the German take on many aspects of defence. Research is no exception. The Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) has now said universities must be allowed to conduct research for military purposes.
