R&D spending decreases slightly in 2020

Report shows fall in innovation expenditure, but federal government maintains Germany will meet 2025 goal

Germany’s expenditure on R&D decreased to 3.14 per cent of GDP in 2020, from 3.19 per cent the previous year, according to the Federal Report on Research and Innovation 2022.

The report was presented by the federal government to parliament, which then summarised it in a statement. The government said the slight drop in spending would not hamper its goal of increasing annual R&D expenditure to 3.5 per cent of GDP by 2025.
