DFG shortens SFB funding period to tackle application crisis

Latest measures also include creation of 11 Collaborative Research Centres to boost German university research

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany’s biggest public research funder, will change the financial framework conditions in its Collaborative Research Centres (SFB) programme to reduce funding terms.

The change will see projects funded for a shorter duration to keep success rates at a reasonable level. The decision was made, the DFG said, after application numbers to the SFB programmes got close to reaching unsustainable levels.
