Research institutions facing pressure from the right

Universities urged to stand up to populism and tackle discrimination against foreign-born academics

Centre parties in Germany have successfully resisted the shift to the right that other European countries have experienced. Nevertheless, its higher education system is facing strong challenges from populist politicians.

Even though it has racked up significant numbers of votes, particularly in the east, the populist right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has not been invited so far to participate in coalition governments at national or regional level.
