Dual-use defence spending to be part of Horizon 2020

The European Commission has outlined plans to fund research into technologies for both civil and military purposes under Horizon 2020, at an event in Paris.

At the conference on 20 and 21 November, the Commission said that Horizon 2020 will fund research into issues common to both sectors, such as common standards for communication technologies. This will in part be supported through the seventh societal challenge, which focuses on freedom and security in Europe, as well as under the industrial-led parts of the programme.

The move follows increasing demand for the EU to improve the efficiency of its defence spending, in light of declining private sector investment.
