Commission takes strategic approach to space

Horizon 2020’s strategy to fund space research based on ‘clusters’ has been welcomed by scientists, who say the approach could be expanded in the future.

The strategy will involve money for some areas of research being allocated in line with a predefined plan, or roadmap, rather than being left to bottom-up calls. Representatives of academia and industry say this approach could improve the coherence of EU projects.

“This is adopting a pattern of work that is common practice within the space community as a whole,” says Richard Brook, president of the UK Association of Independent Research and Technology Organisations.
