Nine industry partnerships launched

The European Commission has officially announced the Shift2Rail joint technology initiative, along with eight further public-private partnerships that will be funded under Horizon 2020.

The Shift2Rail project will spend €920 million in research and innovation for railway transport from 2014-20, said the Commission in its announcement on 16 December. Meanwhile, eight further initiatives covering sectors from manufacturing to computing have been officially launched today (17 December).

“New technologies and products, such as green cars, energy efficient buildings and cleaner manufacturing processes, are essential to address societal challenges,” said the commissioner for research, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, adding that these initiatives would “have a substantial impact on the competitiveness of the EU industry, on sustainable economic growth and the creation of new high-skilled jobs in Europe.”
