What lies ahead

Researchers got their first opportunity to submit proposals for Horizon 2020 when 64 calls were launched on 11 December. But what have potential participants got to look forward to? Laura Greenhalgh takes a closer look.

As EU research commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn put it during her press conference on 11 December, it’s time to get down to business. After years of public debate, the European Commission has launched the first calls for Horizon 2020.

Unlike in previous years, the Commission published draft work programmes a few weeks in advance, so it was not just those ‘in the loop’ who got an early look. But this didn’t dampen excitement on launch day, as researchers hankered to discover how to get their hands on the €7.3 billion due to be spent in 2014 (see table).
