National governments have agreed on a draft regulation on the Shift2Rail Joint Technology Initiative programme, a public-private partnership that aims to improve research and innovation in railways.
Under the proposal, the EU would fund the programme with €450 million from 2014 to 2020, and industry partners, made up of eight companies, are expected to contribute at least €470m in kind. Prospective associated members must commit to contributing 2.5 per cent of the total budget of the programme in which they want to participate in, which should translate into at least €12m, the Council decided.
This proposal matches the European Commission’s preferred structure, which was presented in December.
