Potential for combined EU funds outlined

The European Commission is preparing guidance on how Horizon 2020 money can be spent in combination with EU cohesion funds, in an effort to boost joint use for research and innovation projects.

Between 2014 and 2020, about €100 billion from the European Regional Development Fund will be spent on supporting regional projects on research and innovation, small businesses and ICT development. The funds are available in every part of the EU, although poorer regions will receive most of the money.

The Commission has come up with a plan to allow ERDF money to be spent in combination with Horizon 2020 funds on ‘synergy’ projects. But observers say that successfully combining the two will be up to development agencies in individual regions rather than researchers or the Commission. And they don’t expect such combined funding to materialise quickly.
