Swiss foundation sets up ERC ‘substitute’

The Swiss National Science Foundation is to create a temporary funding pot to support researchers who had planned to apply to the European Research Council.

The fund is intended as a replacement for researchers who are now unable to get money for the 2014 round of the ERC’s Starting Grant and Consolidator Grant schemes, following the suspension of negotiations over Switzerland’s full involvement from EU funding programmes.

The SNSF programme will cover the same scope and funding level as these grant programmes. The Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation is yet to decide whether a similar support fund will be established to replace the ERC’s third programme, its Advanced Grants.
