The process of associating countries in the Western Balkans to the Horizon 2020 programme is on track and due to be finished “soon”, according to an EU body.
An affirmative statement was released on 6 March by the coordinating initiative Western Balkan Countries INCO-NET. The classification of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia as associated countries will enable them to participate in Horizon 2020 on the same terms as EU member states, rather than being classed as “third countries”.
Countries associated to Framework 7 should be associated to Horizon 2020 by the time the first grant agreements of the programme are signed. However, problems have arisen for a number of these previously associated nations, with Switzerland and the Faroe Islands both likely to be considered non-associated countries in the first round of Horizon 2020 calls. The government of Liechtenstein previously announced that it has decided not to associate with the programme.
