The European Research Council has chosen two academics, Sierd Cloetingh and Mart Saarma, to serve as its vice-presidents.
Cloetingh, president of the academy of researchers Academia Europaea, is a Dutch Earth sciences researcher at the Utrecht University. As part of his new job, he will oversee ERC activities in the fields of physical science and engineering.
Meanwhile, Saarma, an Estonian researcher and director of the Centre of Excellence in Molecular and Integrated Neuroscience Research at the University of Helsinki, will be responsible for supervising ERC activities in life sciences.
