The national funding agency for science, research and technology has announced that 15 of its researchers won funding from the European Research Council in 2014, the highest number recorded for the country.
Researchers from Portugal received €26 million through seven starting grants and eight consolidator grants. This is compared to nine grants in 2012 and 2013, two in 2011 and seven in 2010.
The country’s researchers have been applying for ERC grants since 2007. Researchers received between €1.5m to €2.3m to fund their research for a five year period. The success rate for consolidator grants in 2014 was around 15 per cent with more than 2500 proposals submitted while the ERC received nearly 3300 proposals for starting grants with a 10 per cent success rate.
