MEPs have united in opposition to the use of Horizon 2020 money for an EU investment fund, keeping alive hopes that the move could be prevented.
In a vote on 20 April, the European Parliament’s committees on budgets and economic affairs voted to delete articles in the proposal stating that €2.7 billion should be taken from Horizon 2020 allocations. Instead, unspent funds from across all programmes, located in the annual budgetary margins, should be used to fund the European Fund for Strategic Investments (Efsi), MEPs said.
The vote in the lead committees follows a similar stance by others, including the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, and confirms that MEPs will oppose the plans in meetings with the Council of Ministers and the European Commission starting this week.
