Defence plans tipped as ‘transformational’

The EU could more than double collaborative R&D funding for security and defence under Horizon 2020’s successor, a senior European Defence Agency official has said.

Speaking to Research Europe, Denis Roger, director of European synergies and innovation at the EDA, said a planned preparatory action on common security and defence policy-related research could lead to an additional €200 million for the field under the next Framework programme.

A boost of this size would raise the proportion of R&D conducted jointly between member states to around 18 per cent of the total defence spend in Europe, compared with 8 per cent today. This could “change the game” for collaborative defence research in Europe, he says.
