Widening participation should be a major target for the next Framework programme, the European University Association has said.
In a position paper published on Thursday, the EUA said that Framework 9 "should make wider participation based on excellent research a priority". Framework 9 must "further incentivise" the development of universities in newer member states, the EUA said—as well as linking better with the EU Structural Funds.
Overall, the EUA’s three main priorities for Framework 9 are: develop long-term policies and funding instruments for research, minimise discrepancies across the continent, and seek a stronger alignment of EU policies for education, research and innovation.
