Moedas wants emergency €10m for Zika projects

Research commissioner Carlos Moedas has asked member states to approve an emergency budget of €10 million to fund research on the Zika virus.

In a statement issued on 29 January, Moedas said he had instructed DG research and innovation to mobilise the money in response to  the upsurge in cases of severe congenital brain malformations across Latin America. It could be used to combat the Zika virus by developing diagnostics and testing potential treatments or vaccines, he said.

“There can be no doubt that this emergency budget is needed,” said Moedas, “I trust that my request will be approved soon and swiftly by EU Member States”.
