Push to connect Horizon 2020 with structural funds

MEPs have told the EU and member states to do more to combine Horizon 2020 funds with regional money to promote research and innovation.

As it stands, policymakers are failing to make the most of their investments to promote research, a resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 6 July said. Regional funds should be used to pay for high-quality Horizon 2020 applications that miss the cut, and money from the two funds should be combined under public-private partnerships to make investments go further, it said.

Combining the two pots more effectively would help the EU multiple the effects of its research funding—at a premium because of the use of Horizon 2020 allocations for an EU investment fund last year, the resolution said.
