The research funders association Science Europe has backed a call for the European Research Council's annual budget to be doubled.
The ERC’s Scientific Council published a statement on 15 May saying that the ERC’s budget must be at least doubled to €4 billion per year. This would enable it to support all of the excellent applications it receives, as more than 30 per cent of top-graded applications currently go unfunded, it said.
Science Europe has now backed that call, with its president Michael Matlosz saying in a statement that an annual budget of €4bn for the ERC “should be considered as a bare minimum”.
