Researchers targeted by spam mimicking Horizon 2020 portal

Malicious emails disguised as originating from the Horizon 2020 participant portal are actually seeking personal and financial data, the European Commission has announced.

Several researchers have reported been the targets of a ‘phishing’ email asking for personal and financial data such as ID and bank account details, the Commission announced yesterday. The emails come from the fake address grants.eu@europa.eu, and the Commission has urged researchers not to follow instructions in these emails.

The participant portal will never ask researchers to send personal or financial information via email, the Commission said. Researchers wanting to log on to the participant portal should use https://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/ as the starting point, it added.
