EU member state governments must be ‘persuaded and convinced’ of the value of research and innovation, the budgets commissioner Günther Oettinger has said.
Cuts to next year’s Horizon 2020 budget proposed by the European Council, which represents national governments, threaten to slow down European research, Oettinger warned Council representatives on 12 Septemner.
“We are of one mind,” he said of the EU institutions at the European Parliament plenary debate. “We want growth, competitiveness, jobs for Europe.” All that remains is for the Council to be persuaded of the importance of research and innovation for these areas, he said.
