Focus areas for next EU flagships proposed

The European Commission has published proposed focus areas for the next high-budget, long-term projects known as Future and Emerging Technologies Flagships.

The Commission had already said in December 2016 that it was planning to fund flagship technology projects in the areas of ICT, health and the environment, and it published more specific details in a draft 2018-20 FET work programme on 26 September.

Under ICT and connected society, proposals for future flagships should address one of three subtopics if this part of the draft goes unchanged: smart materials and nanoscale engineering; robotics, human-machine interaction and artificial intelligence; and ICT for promoting social interaction.
