Researchers join Parliament in opposing Horizon 2020 budget cuts

Research organisations have voiced their support for a pledge by MEPs to defend EU research funding from heavy cuts proposed by the Council of Ministers.

Jan Palmowski, secretary-general of the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, told Research Europe it was “critical” that the Council be prevented from succeeding in its plan to slice €750 million off the EU budget for competitiveness in 2018. This would include €491m from Horizon 2020.

“The proposed cuts undermine member states’ commitment to boost economic growth, and set an unwelcome precedent for the next Framework programme,” Palmowski said.
