Social sciences ‘sidelined’ by partnership proposals

The European Commission should change a shortlist of industrial R&D partnerships eligible for EU support to include some that focus on the social sciences and humanities, research organisations have said.

There must be space for social sciences and humanities in the second pillar—focused on industry and society—of the EU’s 2021-27 R&D programme Horizon Europe, the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities and the League of European Research Universities said in a letter dated 27 May.

Such socially inclined partnerships should preserve successful collaborations and complement the thematic clusters in the programme, the letter addressed to the Commission’s director-general for R&D Jean-Eric Paquet and national representatives said.
