Bigger role for EIT planned to boost innovation in universities

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s remit should be expanded to include support for entrepreneurship in higher education, the European Commission has proposed.

This bigger role for the EIT, which was set up in 2008 to boost economic growth by supporting knowledge exchange in research, innovation and higher education, was proposed in legislation for 2021-27 published on 11 July.

Under the proposal, the EIT and the Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) it establishes in specific fields would be given the task of designing and coordinating support “for the development of entrepreneurial and innovation capacity of higher education institutions and their integration in innovation ecosystems”.
