Associated countries ‘will bolster parts of Horizon Europe they use’

European Research Council governing body welcomes deal linking non-EU countries’ budget contributions to their winnings

Financial contributions from non-EU countries participating in the 2021-27 EU R&D programme Horizon Europe through association agreements will be channelled preferentially to the parts of the programme they won funding from, legislators and commentators have said.

The rules for Horizon Europe were agreed by negotiators from the European Parliament and Council of the EU on 11 December but are yet to be published. Nevertheless, the governing Scientific Council of the European Research Council, a prestigious funder in the programme, welcomed a part of the agreement relating to associated countries’ financial contributions.
