MEP warns of ‘retroactive cut’ if Horizon 2020 funds aren’t spent

Christian Ehler tells member states that not adding €400m to Horizon Europe would be “irresponsible”

Ahead of negotiations over the EU’s budget for 2022, a leading MEP has warned that refusing to include unspent funds from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme would amount to a retroactive cut to European research funding.

On 20 October, the European Parliament voted to reverse cuts to Horizon Europe spending wanted by member states and proposed an increase in the programme budget by €305 million more than the €12.2 billion tabled by the European Commission. The vote has kicked off three weeks of negotiation with the Council of the EU before an agreement can be reached.
