Developmental biologist will take over at EU’s flagship funder after shock departure of last head

Biologist Maria Leptin has been named as the next president of the European Research Council, more than a year after the funder’s previous head left amid a huge internal row.

The ERC is the EU’s most prestigious funding agency and in 2021 alone it plans to spend €1.9 billion supporting around 1,000 researchers across Europe.
