Drop in researchers seeking ERC starting grants

                        

Fewer than 3,000 people chasing 407 European Research Council grants, the lowest number in years

The number of researchers applying for one of the most prestigious EU grants has slid for a second consecutive year, according to newly published statistics.

The European Research Council (ERC), part of the EU’s vast Horizon Europe funding programme, announced on 7 November that 2,696 people applied for its 2023 Starting Grants, down from 2,932  for the 2022 grants and 4,056 for those awarded in 2021.
