ERC ‘expects €300-400m budget boost’ from UK next year

Additional funds from British return to Horizon Europe would lift funder’s budget over €2.5 billion

The European Research Council is expecting to receive a €300-400 million budget contribution from the UK in 2024, an official has said, which would boost its coffers by around 15 per cent for the year.

The extra money is a result of the agreement on UK association to the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, which the ERC is part of. Under the deal, UK-based researchers will gain access to the 2021-27 programme in exchange for a national budget contribution from 2024.
