Surge in early career researchers seeking ERC grants

European Research Council starting grant success rate likely to slide again as a result

There has been a surge in researchers applying for European Research Council Starting Grants. But even more are likely to be disappointed after the council confirmed only around one in 10 will win the prestigious awards for those in the early stages of their careers.

The ERC said on 9 November that there were 3,474 applicants to this year’s round, up 29 per cent on last year. They will be competing to receive an estimated 387 grants totalling €601 million in 2024, meaning the success rate is likely to be around 11 per cent.
