Complaint over mining research project prompts reminder of need for trust in EU institutions

The European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has expressed “concern” about the European Commission’s approach to transparency, following its refusal to grant full access to documents relating to a mineral exploration research project.

O’Reilly holds an independent post tasked with holding the EU institutions to account and promoting their good administration. A Spanish environmental organisation complained to her in June last year after the Commission granted only partial access to documents related to research at the San Finx mine in Spain, which was funded under the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
