Mission to measure carbon storage using unique instrumentation

The European Space Agency and launcher company Arianespace have signed a contract greenlighting the 2022 launch of the Earth Explorer Biomass satellite, which will map carbon storage in forests and measure deforestation and habitat loss.

The Biomass mission will use a type of instrument that has never before been flown in space, ESA announced on 28 October. This ‘P-band’ long-wave radar will be able to penetrate leafy forest canopy to measure tree height and enable calculation of carbon storage.
