Ministers say deal important to Europe’s ‘digital sovereignty’

The governments of Germany and France have announced plans to jointly develop secure cloud infrastructure for European companies to share and analyse data. Called “Gaia-X”, the initiative is intended to increase Europe’s digital autonomy.

“I am very happy that France and Germany will work hand in hand to lay the foundation of a European data infrastructure based on European values and on the strengths of our diverse economic environment,” German federal minister Peter Altmaier (pictured) said in a statement on the initiative, which was announced on 29 October.
