Consultant hired to carry out publishing study

The European University Association has contracted the consultancy firm Technopolis to examine the read-and-publish agreements that research organisations are increasingly striking with academic publishers.

EUA and a group of 24 other research organisations are funding the study to gain a better understanding of read-and-publish agreements, the association said in an announcement on 16 May. The ultimate aim is to help organisations to negotiate better deals.

Under read-and-publish agreements, research organisations agree a price for their staff to both access a publisher’s subscription content and publish in its open-access outlets. The agreements are becoming increasingly common as research organisations seek to limit their overall publishing and information-access costs while increasing their staff’s uptake of open-access publishing.
