The European Commission and European Space Agency are planning to align parts of their research programmes to optimise Europe’s observation abilities for Earth and climate change monitoring.

Speaking at a conference on 13 May, Josef Aschbacher, ESA’s director of Earth observation programmes, said Europe has the infrastructure and expertise “to make a real difference” when it comes to environmental monitoring.

The hope is that Horizon Europe, the next EU research funding programme starting in 2021, will be designed to complement FutureEO, ESA’s Earth observation research programme.
