Seven EU countries have signed a declaration on working together to develop infrastructure for quantum telecommunications over the next decade.
The joint declaration, finalised on 13 June, sets out ambitions to establish a pan-European cooperation framework over the next year to help the signatories set up a land and space-based secure communications network.
“We need to work together at European level to keep our systems secure even as computers get faster,” said digital economy minister Mariya Gabriel, alluding to the potential of quantum computers to encode and decode information more effectively than their digital predecessors.
