‘Clearer’ call for EU platform hailed

The European Commission’s second attempt to secure an open-access platform for publishing articles from EU-funded researchers has been welcomed by industry experts and open-science advocates.

The Commission is again offering €6.4 million over four years for the platform, dubbed Open Research Europe. The budget covers building, running and promoting the platform, including publication of about 5,600 articles—less than 10 per cent of those published so far under the EU’s R&D programme.

A 2018 procurement attempt ended with the Commission declaring that all submissions “were considered unacceptable and irregular”. Now, the minimum required annual turnover of bidders has been halved to €500,000, opening the door to smaller publishers.
