Cell, Methods and Brain Research among publications seeking ‘transformative journal’ status under open-access push

The scholarly publishing and analytics company Elsevier has submitted an application to register 160 of its titles as ‘transformative journals’ aligned to the open-access Plan S initiative.

Under Plan S, a pan-European effort to increase open-access publishing, the Coalition S funders will require researchers they have supported to make resulting papers openly available immediately from 2021. So-called ‘transformative journals’—subscription journals or hybrid titles offering a mix of paywalled and open content that commit to becoming fully open access—are one route by which publishers can make their content Plan S-compliant.
