Cern says it wants to be environmental role model

Facility aims to limit carbon footprint, but its appetite for water and electricity keeps growing

The head of Cern, the European organisation for nuclear research, has said the facility wants to be “a model for environmentally responsible research”.

Director-general Fabiola Gianotti stated the ambition as Cern published its first public environmental impact report on 9 September, covering activities in 2017-18.
